Return of the Ford Fiesta . . . as an EV?

The Fiesta afterparty. With an electric theme.

The Fiesta’s not over yet. Rumours suggest a possible return for this popular vehicle from as early as 2028. Only this time, it could be fully electric.

Ford Motor Company president for Europe, Jim Baumbick, has strongly hinted that the Ford Fiesta could make a comeback as an affordable EV.

Why Ford is feeling the pressure

The Fiesta was once a UK best-seller, but ever since it was discontinued in July 2023, Ford's sales have gone down year-on-year.

As well as competition from traditional rivals like Peugeot, Renault, and Vauxhall, Ford now also faces a 'great wall' of Chinese competitors including BYD, Omoda, Jaecoo, GWM Ora, Leapmotor, and XPeng – all rapidly growing in popularity in the UK, and with no sign of slowing down.

And with most of these brands focusing heavily on electric vehicles, the challenge is clear: Ford has to fully embrace the electric revolution.

If you can't beat them, join them.

The Fiesta name still matters

Luckily for Ford, the Fiesta name is already hugely familiar to UK drivers – something which can't be said for many of the Chinese brands.

With over 22 million Fiestas having been produced globally, the Fiesta invokes a feeling that many rivals simply can’t manufacture overnight: nostalgia.

In a UK car market where newer Chinese brands are still in the process of building recognition and trust, that emotional connection to the Fiesta could be a powerful advantage for Ford.

Ford’s EV push: “Ready Set Ford”

But it's not just a new Fiesta that's on the agenda.

Ford also plans to introduce other electric vehicles as part of its "Ready Set Ford" electrification strategy. The first one is expected to be a new member of the Bronco family – a compact, rugged SUV set to be produced in Valencia from 2028.

The rollout is expected to continue through to the end of 2029, marking a significant ramp-up in production and ambition.

Will the Ford Fiesta Return in Time?

The future is very much electric, and the Fiesta name is always going to attract UK drivers, so we'd hazard a guess and say yes.

Either way, better late than never.
