In existence since the 1940s and named after Japanese industrialist Soichiro Honda, Honda used to be more known for motorcycles, with its popularity as a car manufacturer really picking up around the turn of the new millennium. Its success hasn't quite been enough to rival that of Toyota, but in terms of the world's largest car manufacturers, Honda does still sit at a very commendable 5th place spot at the time of writing.
It's no secret that previous iterations of the Civic have often attracted something in the way of cult followings (not least with street racers . . .) – a trend which Honda looks set to continue with this latest edition. The manufacturer has preserved all that appealed most about previous versions whilst also refining some of the finer points. Primarily a 5-door hatchback with room for all the family, there's once again an undeniable sporty undertone to this Honda Civic. It also happens to be a car that drives every bit as well as it looks. The Civic comes with a 1.0, 1.5 or a 2.0 VTEC engine, and even entry-level trims provide the vehicle with lane departure warnings, traffic-sign recognition, obstacle detection and adaptive cruise control. And things only get better at the back, as boot space stands at 478-litres – a higher figure than that offered by the Civic's Volkswagen Golf (380-litres) and Vauxhall Astra (370-litres) rivals.
