## Conduct a Pre-drive Vehicle Check

Ideally before every journey if you can.

Or if not, then before any long journey at the very least. 

A quick pre-drive inspection can be useful as it means identifying any faults in a safe place, rather than you finding out on the motorway and having to pull over onto the hard shoulder . . .

And no, we're not expecting you to go rummaging through the car's inner workings. But you do need to check are the following:

1 - **Tyres**: Check the pressure using either a portable pressure gauge or a pressure machine at a supermarket/petrol station, ensuring they are inflated to the correct level for your car (usually it's around 32-35 psi). Also, make sure there are no objects lodged in the tyre treads.

2 - **Lights**: This should include all exterior lights like the tail-lights, headlights, turn signals, brake lights, and hazard warning lights. Make sure they're all in working order.

3 - **Fluid Levels**: Such as the brake fluid, engine oil, engine coolant, and the windshield washer fluid levels. They should be filled up to the correct level (between the minimum and the maximum markings).

4 - **Brakes**: Test them by pressing the pedal down gently, making sure they are responsive and not making any funny noises. They also shouldn't feel spongy. 

5 - **Mirrors**: You need to have a clear view of the whole area around your car, so adjust the mirror angles accordingly. Best make sure they're clean and free of any obstructions as well.

6 - **Windshield**: Check it for cracks, chips, and other damage. Don't forget to clean the inside as well.

7 - **Seat belts**: Also a legal requirement, check that all of your car's seat belts are in good working condition and that they fasten and release properly.

And to be honest, it's difficult to give an objective, one-size-fits-all answer here for everyone as so many people's needs differ and so many of the perks and pitfalls of both leasing and buying overlap with each other. Sort of like a game of Rock, Papers, Scissors.

Still, it's hard to argue against the fact that leasing is a good way to go in the modern age. The fact of the matter is that it offers tremendous flexibility, so if you're curious to know how it compares with buying outright for your particular situation, then we invite you to read on.

## How Does Car Leasing Work?

Despite its rise in popularity, leasing still isn't as well-known as, say, PCP, so here's a quick but effective explanation. Or for those of you who do know, a quick recap.

Basically, when you take out a lease agreement on a new car or a van, you're essentially renting it out for a set period of time. That period of time usually lasts between two to four years, but it could even be as little as one year.

Like with a Hire Purchase (HP) or a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) agreement, the vehicle still belongs to the provider, not you. Unless you're sure that you want to hold onto it for a good number of years, buying doesn't really make financial sense with a new car as it depreciates as soon as you drive them off the forecourt of the dealership. Therefore, we'd say that leasing is definitely the way to go for new cars.

However, buying outright does make sense for a used car that's three or four years old as it has already gone through its major depreciation phase and its future depreciation is going to be much slower, meaning you'll lose less money when (if) you eventually sell it on.

Your odds of being involved in a traffic accident are roughly 88/1, and your odds of being involved in a serious traffic accident are roughly 606/1. Those figures might not seem overly high, but they're not so low as not to be worth worrying about. Out on the roads, anything can happen.

As we all know, being involved in a car accident is always stressful, no matter whether you own, hire or lease your car. But knowing what to do with your damaged leased car after it has been involved in an accident is far from obvious. There's the matter of insurance, then how the crash affects your lease, and then the steps to take with your lease provider. It can be a lot to think about . . .

## What to Do at the Scene of the Accident

Same as you would do with any other accident, whether you're on a car lease deal or not.

You stop at the scene, turn your engine off and switch on the hazard warning lights, then exchange details with the other motorist(s). Call the emergency services if anyone has been injured or if there are vehicles blocking the road.

For insurance purposes, it's important to exchange insurance details and gather as much information as possible, so:

* Note the address and location of the incident and at what time it took place
* Note the details of every vehicle involved, including model, colour, and vehicle registration number
* Note the contact details of the other drivers involved and any pedestrians who were witnesses to the incident
* Photograph any injuries and any damage to vehicles and property

Then . . .

* As already discussed, call your insurance company as soon as possible
* Give them your details (including registration number, name and address), and recite the information above that you've just collected

Important fact: under the Road Traffic Act 1988 section 170, it's actually an offence to fail to stop at the scene of an accident or to fail to report an accident in which you're involved. (And even if you aren't directly involved but your presence was a factor in the incident, it's advisable to stop and remain at the scene for a reasonable length of time.)

If for some reason you aren't able to exchange details with the other driver at the scene, you'll have to report the accident at a police station or to a police constable within 24 hours. And it is compulsory to provide your insurance certificate if another person is injured. Failure to comply with these obligations is an offence under the title 'Failing to stop' and 'Failing to report'. The penalty for it includes a maximum £5,000 fine and 5 to 10 points on your license, not to mention the possibility of a driving disqualification and six months' imprisonment.

Ouch!

## Telling Your Insurer

Even if you are not making a claim yourself, it's vitally important that you report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Failure to do so could invalidate your cover, and chances are that your insurance policy will have a clause in it saying that you need to take this step.

However, in the event that you're paying for repairs yourself in order to preserve your no claims discount, you don't have to submit a claim. The cost of losing your no claims bonus may end up being more than the cost of paying for the repairs yourself.

You will still need to tell your insurance company that you've been involved in an accident. You should supply this information in a letter, telling your insurer what happened, that it is for 'information only' and that you don't want to make a claim.

## What Will Happen to my Insurance if my Lease Car is in an Accident?

Unless you cancel the insurance policy, you'll have to keep making the monthly payments if you've been paying monthly up until this point. The majority of insurance companies let you continue on their policy for 2-3 weeks until you set yourself up with a replacement car. Once you've gotten that replacement, you can set up a new policy. However, if you don't plan on getting a replacement car, you're free to go ahead and cancel your policy.

If your car is a total loss, then you've still got options. If the car is less than 12 months old at the time of the accident, some insurance companies will offer what's called 'New Car Replacement' whereby they will provide you with an identical car. But because you're leasing and you don't own the car, whether you get this or not is entirely up to the finance house. After all, they are the ones who own the car. It's an option that makes great financial sense, but you might be in for a long wait, as you could end up waiting 2-3 months for a replacement car!

## What Happens if the Lease Car Can be Repaired?

Contact your leasing company to check if they can offer you any repairs and at what value. They might only permit you to stick to a list of qualified garages specified by them, but if not, then be sure to shop around as prices can differ across the full range of garages.

The garage mechanics will be able to offer you a final quote for the cost to repair the lease vehicle.

In order to make a claim on your car insurance with your insurance company, you need to have gathered all your documents along with information of the traffic accident. That's why it's so important to stop at the scene and write down or record all of those details we mentioned earlier.

## What Happens if you Total a Leased Car?

When the vehicle is a total loss, it should be possible that your insurance company pays up and reimburses you for its current worth. You’ll end the lease when the current value of the vehicle equals the remaining balance of the lease, and you break even. 

However, you will most likely still owe the leasing company money up to the full value of the vehicle.

That's where gap insurance comes in. Check your policy to see whether it's included. Usually GAP insurance is pretty cheap and is almost always worth having. This is the same if you write off a car that's financed with PCP too.

## What Happens if the Lease Car is Written Off?

The finance house will treat it as if you've bought the car, and therefore end the agreement.

So you will need to get a new contract and go through the whole process again.

But as you still have finance to pay, they will decide on a settlement figure for you to pay. The car insurance company will then pay out how much the car is worth at the time of the accident. Hopefully that's enough to cover the settlement figure. If not, you'll have to pay that yourself, unless you've got Gap insurance. Gap insurance will cover that cost, whereas if you didn't have Gap insurance, you'd have to find the money yourself. This is the same if you write off a car that's financed with PCP too.

## Who is Responsible for Repairs on Leased Cars after an Accident

If another driver caused the accident then you have a right to compensation for any losses as that driver's insurance company should be liable. That includes compensation for any physical injuries suffered by yourself and/or damage to your leased car. If your vehicle is totalled, then they will pay up to the vehicle's market value at the time of the accident.

As is the case with any other automobile accident where the other motorist is the one at fault, the payment will be sent directly to the leasing company and any additional losses reimbursed to you.

But what if the other driver's insurance company denies liability on behalf of them? Well, in that instance you may need to contact your own insurer to negotiate repairs covered by your policy.

## What Kind of Damage is Acceptable on a Lease Car?

Obviously, major damage is a big no-no, but that begs the question: what amount of damage IS acceptable on a lease car? After all, throughout the course of your agreement, your car is bound to pick up some wear and tear from the effects of weather and simply being driven, and any leasing company worth the name knows this. This is why they don't charge you for what's known as [fair wear and tear](https://www.leaseloco.com/blog/leasing-fear-of-fair-wear-and-tear-6f9df364db0b), which includes:

* Regular tyre wear
* Typical brake wear
* Removable stains in the interior
* Minor scratches and dinks on your lease car

Exactly what's deemed acceptable may differ from leasing company to leasing company, so be sure to check over your contract. In general though, you should be fine with the above.

## Turning in a Leased Car with Damage

It's a mistaken belief that your leasing company simply forgives any damage as long as you take out a new leased car with them. No matter what your dealership tells you, someone is going to be responsible for paying up for the damages, and you can bet your two front wheels that it's not going to be them! Even if you go on to take out another car with that dealership, the damage won't be forgiven.

And even if you don't end up paying in cash, the leasing company will transfer the cost of the damages from your previous vehicle onto your new one. That being the case, you will essentially be paying them for the duration of the new lease, as well as paying interest on top of that.

## What's the Difference Between Business and Personal Leasing?

**How you can use the car:** Nothing complicated here. A personal car lease is intended for personal use, whereas a business car lease is intended for business use.

But here's the really good bit . . . you can actually use a business lease for some personal use as well (more on that shortly). 

**The name on the lease:** When you fill out a personal car lease agreement, it will be your own name on all the paperwork. But when you fill out a business car lease, you're leasing the car through your company, so it will be your company’s name.

**The documents:** You will provide your own personal documents (ID, proof of income, bank details etc.), whereas it'll be your equivalent company documents for a business lease. This would include business bank statements, your company registration number, company address and other specific company details which will be approved by the finance company.

Both options will require a quick and easy credit check, but for a business lease, it'll be your company's credit file that's checked.

Basically, VAT!

If your company is VAT-registered, you'll be able to claim back a whopping **100% of the VAT** if you use the car for business use only, or **50% of the VAT** if you use the car for both business and personal use.

And guess how much VAT you can claim back on a personal car lease deal? Yep, a grand total of **0%**. Zilch. Nada.

So great savings either way, but if you do use your business lease for some personal journeys, you may be subject to **Benefit-in-Kind tax** (also known as company car tax). A salary sacrifice car lease is when you ‘sacrifice’ a portion of your salary (before tax) in exchange for a non-cash benefit, such as a brand new lease car. By paying for a car lease from your salary before tax, you are saving on the personal income tax that you would have received if you were paid your salary as normal. A salary sacrifice is most effective with an electric car (or van) because the BIK rate is only 1% in 2021/22 and then will be capped at 2% until 2024/25. The main benefit is that the monthly payments for the car will be reduced and can be much cheaper than getting a car individually. As the car is paid for using your pre-tax income, you don’t have to pay the normal tax or NIC on this and neither will your employer, which can add up to an incredible saving. 

#### Easy process to get a new car
For employees, this scheme means that the employer will be responsible for arranging all of the finance for the car lease. This also means that you won’t be hit with a big upfront fee in the first instance to get the car, and you won’t have to go through a personal credit check. It is a hassle-free way to get a new car as there is no need to work out costs every month as it comes out of your salary. 

#### No financial risk
As the salary sacrifice lease is financed through the employer, you are not tied to a car if you need to leave the company for any reason. This is also an advantage for employers as the employer does not have to keep the car if the employee does leave (as it is paid for by their income).

### Disadvantages Of The Salary Sacrifice Scheme 

#### Reduction of salary
There are certain disadvantages to getting a reduced salary. This could potentially impact any credit or mortgage applications; it may affect the level of maternity pay you receive; any life cover offered through your job; pension amounts or potentially salary-based redundancy settlements. Therefore it is important to think about whether this will suit you. 

#### Early termination fees
The finance is the employer’s responsibility, which is good for the employee as they are not tied down to a contract. However, if the employee leaves the company during the lease term agreement, then the employer will be left with the remaining costs for the car and will either need to continue to pay the monthly payments or pay an early termination fee. 

#### Employee leave
If in the instance that an employee takes maternity or a similar leave, the employer will still need to provide the benefit, even though they will no longer be receiving the salary to sacrifice. This is because if an employee is getting statutory maternity pay, the salary cannot be sacrificed from this and the employer would need to cover the costs of the vehicle, which is a risk to consider for employers.

A salary sacrifice is unlikely to work for people who are on a lower income, as your take-home salary cannot fall under the national minimum wage. 


## Is The Salary Sacrifice Scheme Right For You? 
Getting a car through a salary sacrifice scheme is an excellent way to get a brand new car for a cheaper cost. If you are on a minimum wage contract, or on a wage that would push you below minimum wage once the car amount has been removed from your salary, then this scheme will not be the right one for you. As long as this isn’t you, you can get yourself a brand new car every few years using the scheme. 

The fuel of the car you are looking for may also play a big part in whether this scheme is right for you. As the employee will still need to pay Benefit in Kind (BiK) for the car, an electric car is a much cheaper option. This is because BiK rates for EVs are 1% for 2021-22 and will be going up to 2% after this. For other cars, including petrol and diesel, this BiK rate can go up to 37% for cars that produce over 170g/km of CO2, which can be quite costly. This means that the salary sacrifice will be significantly cheaper for electric vehicles and is best for green vehicles with emissions under 75g/km of CO2.

What Is A Salary Sacrifice Car Scheme?

There are a few different ways to finance a brand new car or van. You may have considered a PCP or a hire purchase, but have never really understood what the difference between the two is. Another option to add to the mix is leasing, and with every finance method having its differences – it’s important to understand these! Once you fully understand the different options, it will become much easier to decide which finance option is the right one for you.    

## What Does Leasing Mean?
Car leasing is also commonly known as Personal Contract Hire (PCH). For a car lease, you will choose an upfront payment amount (either one month, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months upfront); you will choose the term length of the lease, and you will choose your annual mileage amount. Then you will pay fixed monthly amounts for the length of the lease term that you have decided. 

You can think of leasing as a similar concept to renting a property. You pay a deposit or upfront amount, and then pay monthly payments for the length of the lease. Similar to the landlord owning the property, with car leasing you do not own the car or buy it at the end of the contract – you simply hand it back! The landlord will usually inspect the flat, as well as the leasing company for the car. As long as your car has not gone beyond the BVRLA guidelines to acceptable wear and tear; and that you have not gone over the agreed mileage amount, there will be no further costs.

## What Does PCP Mean?
PCP stands for Personal Contract Purchase. PCP is a way of financing your vehicle as opposed to buying it outright. PCP financing can be broken down into three parts; the deposit, the monthly payments and the choice at the end.

For the deposit, you will pay a sum at the beginning before you get the car, which you can choose how much you would like to pay and then the monthly payments will be calculated from the deposit paid, mileage amount and the balloon payment at the end. 

At the end of the agreement, there are a few options with a PCP. The first option is to keep the car to own and pay the balloon payment, which is a lump sum that you can pay in one go or re-finance the amount. The second option is to simply hand the car back with nothing to pay. The final option is to part exchange your car and you can use any equity as a deposit on another vehicle.

## What Does HP Mean?
Hire Purchase (HP) is a way of financing a car where you will usually pay an initial deposit and then go on to pay off the entire value of the car in monthly instalments. At the end, once all the instalments have been made, then the HP ends and you will own the car. This is another popular way of buying a new car as essentially you are hiring the car, while paying for it, to purchase it at the end of the deal. 

The amount that you choose to pay upfront will determine the amount of the monthly instalments, and the interest is calculated at the start of the agreement and added to the finance deal. This means that the payments are fixed during the agreement. The deposit for a HP deal will usually be around 10% of the total value of the car, although similar to leasing and PCP finance, the customer can choose to pay more or less upfront to best suit their needs. 

## What's The Difference Between Leasing, PCP And HP?
It can be a bit confusing to understand exactly what differentiates each finance option and how they all work. We outline the main differences between PCP vs leasing and HP for you to help you decide which method of financing your car is right for you. 

### Owning the car
With a car lease, you never own the car, and will never get an option to purchase it at the end. You simply hand back the car and can take out another lease deal (if you’re organised you can get a new car delivered the same day your old one is getting picked up!) With a HP deal, you are paying the car off in monthly instalments and will own it at the end of the contract. The major difference between PCP and HP is that with a PCP deal you will get the option to either buy the car with a final balloon payment and own it, or hand it back instead. 

### Mileage allowance
With both leasing and PCP, there are mileage allowances. For a PCP, the lump sum at the end is calculated at the end based on what the estimated value of the vehicle is from the mileage you have stated that you will do over the PCP deal. Leasing is similar and the monthly payments are calculated based on how many miles you have stated you will do over the term. With HP you are not tied to mileage limits as you are buying the car in instalments. 

### APR rates
The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) interest rate is something you will need to consider if you are getting a PCP or HP deal, that you wouldn’t have to with a car lease. This interest rate is calculated as you are borrowing money from the funder to finance the car as opposed to buying it outright. The APR rate on a PCP will usually be around 4-8%, although it can be higher so always best to double-check. For a car lease, any interest rates are usually already calculated into the monthly payments. Leasing companies usually won’t show this on the contract but if you’d like to find out you can always ask them. This interest rate is calculated from the car you are paying for, the term length and your credit rating. It is possible to get a deal with no interest, but you would usually have to pay a higher deposit for these. 

### Monthly payments
The monthly payments will tend to be the cheapest with leasing as it is all about the depreciation of the vehicle. The payments are the cheapest, although you do need to agree on an annual mileage and there is no option to buy the vehicle. With HP and PCP contracts, the monthly payments are typically more expensive.

### Handing the car back
One way of understanding the difference between PCP vs lease vs HP is when you hand the car back. Leasing is simple, you hand the car back when your agreement comes to an end after the term you decided at the beginning (typically 2 or 3 years). With HP you will keep the car once you have paid it off. Finally, with a PCP deal, you get the option to either return the car; pay a final balloon payment to keep the car; or part exchange the car.

#### Never sell your car again
With Hire Purchase and PCP, there will probably come a time where you are going to want/need a new car and will need to go through a bit of hassle with trying to sell your car. With leasing, you don’t own the car so you don’t ever need to sell it, you simply hand it back. Therefore, there is no hassle at the end of the term to worry about. What’s great is that you can get a brand new car every few years and will be able to afford a slightly more expensive car. 

#### Fixed monthly payments
You don’t need to worry about interest rates throughout the lease term as your payments are fixed and won’t change. There are no hidden charges – you simply agree on the monthly payments and that’s it! Even if the government massively increases tax on diesels while you’re in the middle of a contract, it won’t affect you. 

#### Flexibility 
Lease contracts are becoming more and more flexible these days. It is also pretty straightforward if you’d like to renegotiate your mileage if you’re doing more or less than expected.

#### Cost

#### Mileage restrictions
You will select your mileage at the beginning of the lease agreement. If you go over this mileage then there will be an excess mileage charge, or you will need to have renegotiated your mileage before you go over it. Although, excess mileage charges typically range from around 3p to 30p per mile, with the most common charge being around 7p per mile. So, if you do go over your agreed mileage, it isn’t a major issue at all.

#### Never own the car 
When you lease a car you will never ‘own’ it, as it is a long-term hire where the car belongs to the leasing company. So you will never own the vehicle and have nothing to sell by the end of it. Once the lease deal is over, you will need to get a new car.

#### Wear and tear restrictions 
You will need to take care of your lease vehicle and ensure that by the end of the lease, it is to the standard set of the [BVRLA guidelines](https://www.bvrla.co.uk/guidance/fair-wear-tear.html) for what is deemed acceptable for fair wear and tear. If you’ve taken care of your car and there is just normal wear and tear then you will not have to pay anything at the end. However, if it goes beyond the BVRLA guidelines and isn’t repaired before being returned then you may face a charge.
